Hey, I wonder if I can have some thoughts from you guys? I know you may not have answers, but general opinions would greatly help me.
Without going into to much detail at this early stage, Im trying to portray a futuristic (say, about 100 years on) near utopian Earth where many of the modern day prejudices do not exist. Racism and sexism is unheard of, bisexuality (and homosexuality) is accepted without thought and the world is generally filled with liberal, but for the most part extremely shallow, beautiful people. There's more to it, of course, or there wouldnt be much of a story, but that's the setting.
My concern is, and Ill try to put this tactfully, that by displaying a world that may challenge modern day conceptions, could it put script readers (I.E. producers in general) off going further with the project? The reason they look for not to read past page 10? My main male character does have a close male companion, which will be shown by a brief kiss, a very close friendship, some jealousy and an intense need to understand the person he loves. This relationship will be tested and may fail (I havent quite decided yet) in favour of a female lead. I dont intend throwing gratuitous sex scenes in or anything that may strongly disagree with the less open-minded members of society. Other than that, the setting will be displayed as a world of apparent equality and harmony.
Im aiming for something with a general appeal to the audience and to gently challenge views, which is one of the main reasons why Im a writer. The love stories in the narrative are not the focus, theyre only tools to add conflict and lend support in a dramatic fashion. Im concerned that any movie with a non-heterosexual hero will automatically be put into a gay movie category. I also wonder if this might not be the right project for someone trying to break into the industry? Your thoughts, and any reassurances, would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
K
