Rethinking this slightly, even in fantasy settings a writer should be able to show an adequate emotional response to a given situation. I personally am starting to greatly dislike the American hero types who are not worried by anything. An example of this is in the island, where the leads are in a totally alien world and get into some serious trouble, but seem to accept it with ease. Wheres the internal identity crisis? Wheres the grief of dead allies? Wheres the insecurity that a risky plan might fail? Total coolness may be acceptable when someone has had years of military training, but the average Joe usually feels something. Sorry to rant pointlessly.

Back to the point, it can be useful to use our experiences to relate to a fantasy situation. We dont know how wed feel about an alien attack, but we do know how we felt about any of the recent major terrorist attacks- the dread, the anger, and the after effects. We may not know what its like to carry the fate of the world, in the shape of a gold ring, around our necks, but Im sure most of us can relate to being totally out of our element, away from our home and have a feeling of responsibility for others, perhaps in our care. Exaggerate these a bit, Im sure we can create a believable experience.

In conclusion to this, I believe that our experiences can help us relate to a given situation, but our imagination can redefine it in interesting and different ways which would probably work equally as well.
