Anybody have any tips on inspiration for writing a screenplay in the crime genre? I have many ideas but I want what I write to be as unique as it can be. I start writing and I just get stuck sometimes, or it just goes in the wrong direction.

Scour the papers. Look for the "behind the headline" stuff. There are a ton of crime related shows on cable if you're in the US. Probably similar fare elsewhere.
Focus on the characters, not the crime itself. Watch Michael Mann's Heat, Theif, Collateral and any of his other crime related stuff. He is extremely accurate. Contact local law enforcement to see if they do any "ride-alongs". For a real insider's view committ armed robbery and then get sent to jail. Just don't drop the soap |

if you're not already inspired to write in the crime genre then i suggest you don't. write what inspires you.....something you're passionate about. if you have no passion then write sitcoms
or take RW's advice: commit a crime, get locked up, and after you lather up....DROP the soap! |
